El molinete y el ancla

Topic 1: Nomenclatura Náutica

Name the parts of the windlass (molinete), the anchor line (línea de fondeo) and the anchor (ancla), and say what each one is for.

Terms

Arms (brazos) — Each of the parts of the anchor that end in a fluke (uña).
Cruz (del ancla)

Crown (cruz) — Junction of the anchor's shank (caña) with the arms (brazos).
Flukes (uñas) — Triangular point in which the arms (brazos) of the anchor end.
Arganeo
Ring (arganeo) — The first link of the chain is joined to the anchor by means of a ring called the arganeo.
Shank (caña) — Part of the anchor between the crown (cruz) and the ring (arganeo).
Stock (cepo) — Wooden or iron piece fitted to the shank (caña) of the anchor near the ring (arganeo), perpendicular to the shank and to the plane of the arms (brazos); it makes one of the flukes (uñas) dig in and hold on the bottom.
Gypsy (barbotén) — Double disc joined to the windlass (molinete) drum, with recesses in which the chain links engage.
Joining shackle (grillete de unión) — Fitting that joins the first link of the chain to the anchor ring (arganeo).

Windlass brake (freno del molinete) — Part of the windlass (molinete) applied to stop the chain when the anchor reaches the bottom after being let go with the clutch (embrague) disengaged.
Windlass clutch (embrague) — The function of the clutch is to connect the electric motor to the drum in order to transmit the rotation to the gypsy (barboten) and so start heaving in or paying out.
Molinete
Windlass (molinete) — Machine for hoisting or lowering the anchor chain; on recreational craft it is usually driven by an electric motor.

Anchor line (línea de fondeo) — The amount of rope or chain needed to anchor: at least five boat lengths (esloras); from 6 m in length, at least one boat length of chain.
