El timón

Topic 1: Nomenclatura Náutica

Name the parts of the rudder, the tiller and the wheel and tell an unbalanced rudder (timón ordinario) from a balanced one (compensado).

Terms

Rudder (timón) — Part located at the stern, abaft the propeller, used to steer the ship: to keep or alter course.
Rudder blade (pala, azafrán) — Flat surface of the rudder, turned by the rudder stock (mecha).
Mecha
Rudder stock (mecha) — Shaft of the rudder that turns the blade; it enters the hull through the rudder trunk (limera) and ends at the tiller, the wheel or the steering gear (servotimón).
Limera
Rudder trunk (limera) — Opening in the hull through which the rudder stock (mecha) passes to be connected to the tiller or the wheel. The rudder touching the bottom or a knock can bend or break its seals and open a leak.
Tiller (caña del timón) — Lever fitted into the head of the rudder, with which it is operated: it moves the rudder stock (mecha) and the blade (pala). It is part of the steering system.
Balanced rudder (timón compensado) — Part of the blade is forward of the rudder stock (mecha); this reduces the effort needed to turn the rudder by almost half.
Unbalanced rudder (timón ordinario) — Rudder whose blade is entirely abaft the rudder stock (mecha), i.e. the axis of rotation.
Guardines (guarnes)
Steering cables (guardines, guarnes) — Cables that transmit the movement from the wheel (rueda) to the rudder stock (mecha).
Steering wheel (rueda) — Wheel of the steering system that turns the rudder instead of a tiller: its rotation reaches the rudder stock (mecha) through the steering cables (guardines). It is fitted on boats of a certain size, where a tiller would be too hard to move.
