La hélice

Topic 1: Nomenclatura Náutica

Name the parts of the propeller and tell right-handed (dextrógira), left-handed (levógira), twin (gemelas), controllable-pitch (reversible) and folding (de palas abatibles) propellers apart.

Terms

Capacete
Propeller cap (capacete) — Conical, streamlined part of the propeller hub (núcleo): it reduces resistance to headway and prevents water from entering the hub.
Propeller (hélice) — The ship's propulsion element: blades (palas) attached to a hub (núcleo) that is turned by the shaft (eje).
Propeller shaft (eje de la hélice) — Shaft that turns the propeller (hélice) blades as it rotates; it leaves the hull through the stern tube (bocina) and must be inclined between 7° and 15° relative to the engine.
Bocina
Stern tube (bocina) — Opening at the stern through which the propeller shaft leaves the hull. It is kept watertight by the stuffing box and its packing, which must be well maintained.
Propeller hub (núcleo) — Central part of the propeller (hélice) to which the blades (palas) are fixed.
Propeller blade (pala de la hélice) — Each of the parts of the propeller attached to the hub (núcleo). It has a pressure face (cara activa) and a suction face (cara pasiva), and a leading edge (arista de entrada) and a trailing edge (arista de salida).
Right-handed propeller (hélice dextrógira) — Seen from astern going ahead, it turns to the right, clockwise.
Left-handed propeller (hélice levógira) — Seen from astern going ahead, it turns to the left, anticlockwise.
Outward-turning twin screws (hélices gemelas, giro al exterior) — The port (babor) propeller is left-handed (levógira) and the starboard (estribor) one right-handed (dextrógira); the transverse thrust of the blades (presión lateral de las palas) is compensated.
Controllable-pitch propeller (hélice reversible, de paso variable) — Propeller whose blades (palas) are not fixed to the hub (núcleo) but pivoted on it: the angle of attack of the blades (their pitch, paso) can be varied at will and the thrust can be reversed without stopping the engine.
Folding propeller (hélice de palas abatibles, plegables) — It folds its blades towards the shaft to avoid friction; generally used on sailing yachts.
Propeller slip (retroceso) — Loss of advance of the propeller: as it turns in a liquid, slippage occurs and the actual advance is less than the pitch (paso) (the distance it would theoretically advance in one revolution).
