Partes de un cabo

Topic 1: Nomenclatura Náutica

Name the working end (chicote), bight (seno), eye (gaza) and painter (boza), recognise the four basic knots and say where a mooring line is made fast.

Terms

Cornamusas
Cleats (cornamusas) — T-shaped or double-T-shaped wooden or metal fittings, firmly secured to the deck (cubierta), for making ropes (cabos) and mooring lines (amarras) fast on them: taking a turn (tomar vuelta), dropping an eye over (encapillar), etc.
Anchor bend (vuelta de rezón) — Knot whose main purpose is to attach a rope (cabo) to the ring (arganeo) of a kedge (anclote) or grapnel (rezón), and also the anchor rode (línea de fondeo) to the ring of the anchor. It is easy to untie even when wet; it is also used to make a rope fast quickly to a pole, eyebolt (cáncamo) or ring (argolla).
Bight (seno) of a rope — Curve of the rope between the ends that hold it.
As de guía
Bowline (as de guía) — One of the most useful knots: it is used in place of an eye (gaza), as an eye without splicing, e.g. tied in the working end (chicote) to drop it over the bollard (noray). It does not slip and hardly tightens when under load.
Ballestrinque
Clove hitch (ballestrinque) — Multi-purpose knot that tightens on itself as it takes the load; very often used to make the fenders (defensas) fast along the sides (to the guardrail, barandilla).
Gaza
Eye (gaza) — A kind of loop at the end of a rope (cabo), made by splicing its strands; generally used to make the rope fast by dropping it over something (encapillar), e.g. a bollard (noray).
Boza
Painter (boza) — Line a few fathoms long, made fast to the bow of small craft, used to moor them to a ship, quay, etc.
Reef knot (nudo llano, or de envergue) — Knot generally used to join two ropes of the same size (mena), equal or similar in thickness; it also joins the two ends of the same rope.
Chicote
Working end (chicote) — End of a rope or cable (according to the RAE: end, tip or point of a rope).
