El casco y la orientación a bordo

Topic 1: Nomenclatura Náutica

Point out on the boat the hull (casco), deck (cubierta), bow (proa), stern (popa), centreline (línea de crujía), sides (bandas), ship's sides (costados), bows (amuras), quarters (aletas) and abeam (través), and say which way you are looking.

Terms

Cubierta
Deck (cubierta) — Surface that closes the hull at the top and makes it practically watertight. The main deck (cubierta principal) runs continuously from bow to stern.
Amuras
Bows (amuras) — Curved parts of the sides near the bow (proa), which converge to form it. There are two: the starboard bow (estribor) and the port bow (babor).
Aletas
Quarters (aletas) — The curved parts of the sides that converge to form the stern. There are two: starboard (estribor) and port (babor).
Casco
Hull (casco) — Body of the ship excluding masts and spars (arboladura), machinery (máquinas) and equipment (pertrechos). Its shape depends on the shape of the frames (cuadernas).
Proa
Bow (proa) — Forward part of the ship, generally finer than the stern; it cuts through the water when going ahead.
Popa
Stern (popa) — After part of the ship, opposite the bow. The rudder (timón) and the propellers (hélices) are located there.
Costados
Sides (costados) — Vertical outer lateral parts of the hull: the starboard side (estribor) on the right and the port side (babor) on the left. The costado is only the outer face of the banda, not the whole half of the vessel.
Bandas: estribor y babor
Sides: starboard and port (estribor y babor) — The two equal halves into which the centreline (línea de crujía) divides the vessel: facing the bow, starboard (estribor, Er) is on the right and port (babor, Br) on the left. Each banda is that whole half of the vessel, from hull to deck; its outer face is the costado.
Centreline (línea de crujía) — Imaginary fore-and-aft line from bow to stern that divides the ship into two equal halves, called sides (bandas).
Centreline plane (plano de crujía) — Plane that, from bow to stern, divides the boat into two equal parts.
Abeam (través) — Perpendicular to the centreline (línea de crujía) drawn at the middle of the ship: abeam to starboard (estribor) or to port (babor).
