El esqueleto del casco

Topic 1: Nomenclatura Náutica

Name the structural parts — keel (quilla), stem (roda), sternpost (codaste), frames (cuadernas), beams (baos), bulwark (borda), gunwale (regala) — and point them out on the boat.

Terms

Quilla
Keel (quilla) — Fore-and-aft member at the bottom of the hull, from bow to stern: the backbone of the ship and the base of the frames. It ends at the stem (roda) and the sternpost (codaste).
Forefoot (pie de roda) — Member that joins the keel (quilla) to the stem (roda).
Roda
Stem (roda) — Thick, curved member of wood or iron that forms the bow: the forward continuation of the keel.
Codaste
Sternpost (codaste) — Member joined to the keel at its after end, perpendicular or nearly perpendicular to it. In single-screw ships it has two parts: the propeller post (codaste proel), with the opening (bocina) through which the propeller shaft comes out, and the rudder post (codaste popel), which usually carries the pins on which the rudder is hung.
Borda
Bulwark (borda) — Upper part of the side, between the deck and the start of the gunwale (regala).
Regala
Gunwale (regala) — Fore-and-aft member running from bow to stern that covers the top of the bulwark (borda).
Bilge keels (quillas de balance) — Inclined keels (about 45°) fitted at the turn of the bilge (pantoques) to reduce rolling.
Cuadernas
Frames (cuadernas) — V- or U-shaped transverse members running from the keel to the top of the side: the skeleton that gives the hull its shape.
Baos
Beams (baos) — Transverse strengthening members running across the ship from port to starboard; they join the frames at the top and support the deck.
