Cubierta y aberturas

Topic 1: Nomenclatura Náutica

Recognise every opening and every guard on the deck and the ship's sides, and not confuse skylight (lumbrera), hull window (tragaluz), porthole (portillo) and hatch (escotilla).

Terms

Imbornales
Scuppers (imbornales) — Openings in the sides, usually at the level of the waterway (trancanil), through which water shipped on deck and in the cockpit (bañera) drains away. If they are blocked, stability is compromised; when refuelling they are plugged so that a spill on deck does not go overboard (pollution).
Portholes (portillos, ojos de buey) — Openings, usually circular, in the sides; they give light and ventilation to the interior. They can be fixed (fijos) or opening (practicables).
Escotilla
Hatch (escotilla) — Opening in the deck, usually square or rectangular, giving access for people and goods to the compartments.
Cockpit (bañera) — On recreational craft, the part at the stern, usually open. On some sailing yachts it holds the tiller (caña) or the steering wheel (rueda).
Pasamanos
Handrails (pasamanos) — Fittings to hold on to when moving about the boat. If their height exceeds 45 cm, intermediate handrails are fitted.
Candeleros
Rail stanchions (candeleros) — Fittings, usually metal, that support the wires or ropes forming the handrails (pasamanos).
Guardamancebos
Guardrail (guardamancebos) — Wire running from bow to stern along both sides, supported by the stanchions (candeleros), for the safety of the crew.
Lumbrera
Skylight (lumbrera) — Glazed opening on the deck that gives light and ventilation to the interior compartments.
Cowl ventilator (manguerote de ventilación) — Tube with a rotating cowl on deck that catches air to ventilate the interior.
Tragaluces
Hull windows (tragaluces) — Windows in the sides whose purpose is to let in light.
