Fondear y levar

Topic 1: Nomenclatura Náutica

Recognise the types of anchor and use the calls of the manoeuvre: heave in (virar), veer (filar), up and down (a pique), a-cockbill (a la pendura), weigh anchor (levar), anchor aweigh (zarpar), clear anchor (clara y libre).

Terms

Plough anchor (ancla de arado, CQR) — Plough-shaped anchor (CQR: Coastal Quick Release) for small craft; very suitable for sandy bottoms.
Ancla Danforth
Danforth anchor (ancla Danforth) — Anchor with two large flukes that pivot about 45° around the shank (caña); it digs in easily in sandy or muddy bottoms.
Grapnel (rezón) — Small anchor with four flukes (hooks) and no stock (cepo), with a central shank; used for small craft.
Anchor a-cockbill (ancla a la pendura) — Anchor hanging outside the hawsepipe (escobén) or over the bulwark (borda), clear of the bottom, ready for anchoring.
Filar (la cadena)
Arriar progresivamente la cadena.
Veer (filar) the chain — To pay out the chain gradually.
Heave in (virar) the chain — To bring up the anchor chain, especially by mechanical means such as the windlass (molinete).
Ancla a pique
Anchor up and down (ancla a pique) — The chain is vertical and the anchor is just touching the bottom.
Zarpar
Anchor aweigh (zarpar) — The moment when the anchor breaks out of the ground at the anchorage (fondeadero).
Clara y libre
Clear anchor (clara y libre) — Call reporting that the anchor has come up to the surface clear.
Weigh (levar) the anchor — To bring the anchor fully aboard: to recover the anchor and chain to leave the anchorage, going ahead and hauling in the chain until it is up and down (a pique). If the chain then pulls hard towards the bow, the anchor is probably fouled on the bottom (enrocada): slack off very carefully so that the line does not foul the propeller, give a few turns ahead (paladas avante) and start the manoeuvre again.
