Elementos de amarre

Topic 2: Elementos de Amarre y Fondeo

Recognise on the quay and on board the bollard (noray), bollard (bolardo), mooring block (muerto), buoy (boya), fenders (defensas), boat hook (bichero), fairlead (guía cabo), sheave (roldana), bitts (bitas) and cleats (cornamusas), and say what each one is for when mooring.

Terms

Noray
Bollard (noray) — Cylindrical, symmetrical fitting fixed to the quay (muelle), used to make fast (hacer firmes) the lines (cabos) with which vessels are moored.
Bolardo
Bollard (bolardo) — Quay fitting for making fast (hacer firmes) the mooring lines (amarras), like the noray, but asymmetrical in shape.
Muerto
Mooring block (muerto) — Block of iron, concrete or another solid, heavy material laid on the seabed and connected by a rope (cabo), wire (cable) or chain to a buoy (boya); boats are moored to it.
Boya
Buoy (boya) — Floating object (iron, plastic, etc.) connected by a wire (cable) or rope (cabo) to a mooring block (muerto); it is used to indicate any circumstance (e.g. a data buoy) or to mark the limits of an area, such as the 200-metre limit of bathing areas.
Defensas
Fenders (defensas) — Items placed along the sides (costados) of boats and on quays or pontoons (pantalanes) to cushion the rubbing or small knocks that may occur during manoeuvres. When rafting up, both the arriving boat and the one alongside hang their fenders on the side concerned.
Bichero
Boat hook (bichero) — Wooden or metal pole (nowadays usually aluminium) with a hook at one end for catching lines (cabos), holding the boat and pushing it away from or drawing it towards quays or other boats: an extension of the human arm.
Roldana
Sheave (roldana) — Grooved wheel (of a block, motón) over which a rope runs.
Bitas
Bitts (bitas) — U-shaped wooden or metal fittings, firmly secured to the deck (cubierta), for making the mooring lines (amarras) fast on them: taking a turn (tomar vuelta), dropping an eye over (encapillar), etc.
Cornamusas
Cleats (cornamusas) — T-shaped or double-T-shaped wooden or metal fittings, firmly secured to the deck (cubierta), for making ropes (cabos) and mooring lines (amarras) fast on them: taking a turn (tomar vuelta), dropping an eye over (encapillar), etc.
Fairlead (guía cabo) — Fitting used to lead a line (cabo) towards a halyard (driza), or to pass a mooring line (amarra) so that it stays fixed.
